Leo Thorne's Story (Uintah County Prominent People)
by Doris Karren Burton
Leo C. Thorne was active in public affairs serving as the Scoutmaster of Troop #1 sponsored by Kingsbury Community Church, the first scout troop in Uintah County. He was Justice of the Peace for Uintah County, and for several years he acted as a Juvenile Judge for Duchesne and Uintah counties. He was a member of the planning committee for the original Uinta Basin Industrial Convention (UBIC). He was a charter member and the first secretary of the Vernal Lions Club. He was very supportive of the Utah Field House of Natural History and served there in any way he could. He was always an active booster of the Uinta Basin and public service.
Thorne, in his little green visor, will always be remembered scurrying up the up the street to the post office or across the street to the department store (Ashton Brothers) or visiting with someone on the corner. He was so involved in community affairs, running his photography shop, and all over the basin taking photos, he went on the run.
Leo C. Thorne was a pillar of this community for more than eighty years and even more than thirty years after his death, he continues to give of himself, his profession, and his lifelong treasures. This is the story of Leo C. Thorne -- eminent photographer and amateur archeologist.
