In the mid-1800s, people who lived in eastern North America began moving west. Many adventurous men and women traveled across the continent to the unsettled wilderness known as the western frontier. The first settlers made the long journey in covered wagons. After railway lines were built, most people traveled by train. The journey was only the first of many challenges for these western pioneers.
Too Risky for women? In the beginning, the travelers to the West were mostly men. The trip was full of hardships and dangers, the frontier was a difficult and lonely place to live. Some people believed that it was too risky for women to make the journey. Many women were excited about the new land, however, and did not want to be left behind. They began to move west as well.
